5 Minutes to Start Your Day Right: The Daily 3+3 Habit That Changes Everything
If you’ve ever started your day feeling rushed, reactive, overwhelmed, or already behind, you’re not alone. That thing called life, hormones, schedules, family demands—there’s a lot coming at us before we even put our feet on the floor.
But what if the first five minutes of your morning could completely shift the way the rest of your day unfolds?
That’s exactly what the Daily 3+3 Habit does.
In this week’s Say Yes! to Chocolate podcast episode, Sara B and I unpack this simple mindset + clarity practice that I’ve used personally for over 20 years—and it’s one of the biggest reasons my life looks and feels different than the way I was raised.
Let’s break it down.

Why Your Morning Mindset Actually Matters
I grew up in a very negative home. I’m not sure my parents meant to be negative – it was just their set point – almost like pessimism on auto-pilot.
While my parents were hard-working & loving people, everything was viewed through the lens of victimhood and limitation—never opportunity or possibility.
Every night at the dinner table was a recap of struggles, stress, and “woe is me” stories. Some nights it almost felt like a competition as to who had the worse day.
I remember thinking even as a kid: There has to be a better way to live. Surely not everyone thinks like this.
And that belief became the seed of the Daily 3+3.
Over the years (and through a whole lot of real life), I’ve learned that your mindset isn’t just a “nice idea.” It’s not about glitter pens, manifesting journals, or forcing toxic positivity, either.
It’s about perspective.
It’s about focus.
It’s about choosing—deliberately—where your energy goes.
Because what you focus on determines the choices you see… and the choices you see (and make) determine the life you build.
The Daily 3+3: Your 5-Minute Morning Reset
The Daily 3+3 is beautifully simple:
✨ 1. Three Priorities
These are the three things that matter most today. Not 20. Not your entire to-do list. Just the big three.
They might be:
- Three tasks
- Three people you want to touch base with
- Three intentions you want to hold
✨ 2. Three Gratitudes
Three things you’re grateful for—different each day if possible.
That’s it.
Six simple lines that completely reframe your focus for the day.
Why It Works (Backed by Science, Not Wishful Thinking)
Gratitude isn’t fluff. It’s biochemistry and neuroscience.
When you think a grateful or happy thought, your brain produces neurotransmitters (fancy word for chemical messengers that talk to the rest of your body!) that shift your physical state: better mood, lowered stress response, decreased blood pressure, stronger immune response, and increased resilience.
This is literal psycho-neuro-immunology at work—the science of how the brain influences the body.
Which means your quick morning practice isn’t just mental…
It’s physiological.
It gives you better fuel to move through your day.
“But What If I’m Not a Morning Person?”
Perfect! Neither is Sara B 😊
This practice works anywhere you stack it:
- While your coffee brews
- In the shower
- While sitting on your deck with morning light
- In the notes app on your phone
- On the side of your kid’s bed reminding them it’s a brand new day
And yes… some mornings your gratitude will be as basic as,
“I’m grateful there’s coffee.”
Other days it will be deeper.
Both count.
The magic is not in perfection—it’s in consistency.
Real-Life Example: The Biggest Win of the Day
Here’s the mindset shift that changed everything for me:
The simple fact that I woke up today is the biggest win of the day.
Because not everyone does.
Everything after that? Bonus points.
And the second biggest win?
Starting the day with a smile and genuine happiness.
Not because life is perfect—but because I choose where my energy goes.
That choice changes the way I see possibilities instead of problems…
Opportunities instead of obstacles…
Agency instead of victimhood.
How I Habit-Stack the Daily 3+3
For me, this practice stacks with my morning sunlight (Habit #1) and my daily devotional.
If it’s warm out, I sit on my east-facing deck.
If it’s cold, I sit by the window.
Coffee in hand.
Sun on my face.
Six quick lines in my notebook.
It’s peaceful. It’s grounding. It’s doable.
And it’s the most impactful way I start my day. It also influences every choice I make throughout the rest of the day. And day in and day out? These choices have shaped the entire outcome of my life and where I am today.
Your KISS Action Step
Tomorrow morning, try this:
✨ Grab a pen, notebook, or your phone
✨ Sit where the sunlight can reach your face
✨ Write down: three priorities + three gratitudes
✨ No pressure. No perfection. Just presence.
You can do it in 30 seconds. And it might just change the trajectory of your whole day.
