Gratitude: Let's Spice It Up!
Even though the benefits of gratitude are widely known, if you’re anything like most of us, it can be a really hard habit to stick with.
Here are some fresh & fun ways to make your Gratitude Practice a daily habit...
Use a Gratitude Journal - My favorite is the 5-Minute Journal – available HERE - makes this a fun daily task and can also become kind of like a memory keep as well.
Freshen Up Your Thanks
The benefits of practicing gratitude just won’t happen if all we do everyday is the same thing…like “I’m grateful for my family” week after week. It just doesn’t keep your brain on alert for fresh grateful moments. Try getting specific by writing “Today my husband gave me a shoulder rub when he knew I was really stressed” or "My sister invited me over for dinner so I didn't have to cook after a long day." Furthermore, be sure to stretch yourself beyond the great stuff right in front of you...notice smells, textures, temperatures. Make a game out of noticing new things each day.
Make Thankfulness Fun By Mixing It Up
Don’t limit yourself! If journaling is feeling stale, try out new and creative ways. Maybe try a gratitude jar - any time you experience a particular moment of gratitude, write it on a piece of paper and put it in a jar. Then on your birthday or New Year’s Eve or every month, empty the jar and review everything you wrote.
Be Social About Your Gratitude Practice
Focus gratitude on people rather than circumstances or material things. Why not include others in your gratitude practice? You could write a gratitude letter to someone. You could also share the day’s grateful moments around the dinner table or have your friends or family join you in a Gratitude Challenge. Text someone everyday…
No matter what, practicing Gratitude has profound benefits to our overall physical and mental health by lowering stress and cortisol levels - the 2 biggest culprits to nearly every chronic illness today.
