Protein for Optimal Bone Health

Protein is an important nutrient in the diet and supports nearly every system in the body - including our skeletal structure.

BUT, nobody really thinks about protein when it comes to bone health. Calcium, Vitamin D3, maybe K2 and other minerals, but rarely PROTEIN.

Here are some fascinating facts about why protein is important, especially for bone health:
- Bone is 50% protein by volume
- Essential to maintain the structure of all connective tissue (muscle, ligaments, tendons AND bone)
- Provides the "house" (the bony matrix) for calcium and other important minerals to attach

So, just how much protein do you need daily? And what foods are best?

Why Protein?

Protein is incredibly important for every system in the body but nobody really thinks about protein when it comes to their bone health.

BUT… bone is actually 50 protein by volume! 

Protein is essential to maintaining the structure of all of our connective tissue, including bone, along with all of our muscles, ligaments, and tendons. We also have connective tissue in our skin as well our digestive tract. Our heart and blood vessels are also connective tissue and they all require protein!

Bone tissue is no exception - protein actually provides the bony matrix or the “house” which looks like a honeycomb inside of our bones. 

That protein matrix is where calcium and magnesium and all of our bone building nutrients get deposited to build the strength and quality of bone. 

So if you're not eating enough protein & you can't build an optimal protein matrix in your bone, there's no place for the calcium and the nutrients to attach. 

This leads to compromised bone density & bone quality.

Protein: How much?

How much protein do we need? 

The minimum amount of protein in grams per day is about half your body weight.

EXAMPLE: If you weigh 150 pounds, you need about 75 grams of protein at a minimum everyday. Optimally, you need around 70% of your body weight, meaning 105 grams of protein daily if you weigh 150 pounds.

If you have compromised health in any way, you need to visit with your healthcare provider.
